What is Bollywood? Bollywood is the name given to the film industry in the Hindi language, the biggest Indian film industry, in terms of profit and popularity nationally and internationally. The name comes from the fusion of Bollywood Mumbai (old name of Mumbai, the city where this industry is concentrated) and Hollywood (the name given to the American film industry). However this name is sometimes used to designate the whole Indian cinema that it is a misuse.
Raja Harishchandra (1913), was the first silent film made in India. Was made by Dadasaheb Phalke. By the 1930s, this industry produced about 200 films a year. The first Indian sound film was Alam Ara (1931) of Ardeshir Irani, was a great success. There was clearly a huge market for talkies and musicals, Bollywood and so all other regional industries quickly switched to produce films.
